FLIPPING GUIDE

# Flipping cars and trucks from Facebook Marketplace.

Vehicles are where Marketplace spreads get big: a few hundred dollars under value on a phone becomes a few thousand on a truck. So do the mistakes. Here's how to buy carefully.

**Before you start:** vehicle sales are regulated. Title transfer, sales tax, and how many cars a private person can sell per year before needing a dealer license differ by state. Check your state DMV's rules. This guide is general information, not legal advice.

## Where the spread comes from

- **Sellers who need it gone:** moving, a new car already bought, a relative's car to clear out.
- **Fixable problems priced as fatal:** dead battery, a warning light with a cheap known fix, cosmetic damage.
- **Bad listings:** dark photos, no mileage, the wrong trim, posted at 11pm.

## Valuing it quickly and honestly

Value the exact year, make, model, and trim with a pricing guide, then adjust for **mileage** and condition. A 170,000-mile truck isn't worth what a 60,000-mile one is. Then sanity-check against private-party sales near you.

Be conservative: plan for reconditioning (tires, brakes, fluids, detailing), title and registration fees, and a buffer for something you missed.

## Pre-purchase checklist

Do these before money changes hands

| Check | What you're looking for |
| --- | --- |
| Title | In the seller's name, clean (not salvage, rebuilt, or flood unless priced for it), no open lien. |
| VIN | Matches on the title, dash, and door jamb. Run a history report for accidents, odometer issues, and title brands. |
| Cold start | Ask them not to warm it up. Listen for knocks, look for smoke, watch warning lights. |
| Scan codes | An inexpensive OBD-II scanner shows stored and pending codes (1996 and newer vehicles). |
| Test drive | Transmission shifts, brakes, steering pull, noises at highway speed. |
| Rust and leaks | Frame, rockers, under the engine and transmission. |
| Mechanic | For bigger buys, a pre-purchase inspection is cheap insurance. |

## Buying and reselling

- Meet somewhere safe, bring someone, and use a traceable payment where you can.
- Complete the title and bill of sale correctly, and follow your state's rules on registering and reselling.
- Photograph in daylight, list the real mileage and known issues, and price near market. Honest listings sell faster and cause fewer problems later.

## Finding them first

Pounce Pro watches the **Cars & Trucks** category and powersports (motorcycles, dirt bikes, ATVs, UTVs, jet skis, snowmobiles). It maps each listing to an exact priced model-year using KBB and J.D. Power data, adjusts for the mileage the seller posted, and filters out dealer listings so you see private-party deals. Listings that need repairs get a badge, with per-search toggles for fixer-uppers and major projects. If a listing can't be matched to a real value, Pounce drops it instead of guessing.

Those values are estimates and filters, not an inspection, and profit isn't guaranteed. [What Pro includes](https://pounce.gg/standard-vs-pro) · [Vehicle searches in the Docs](https://pounce.gg/docs#vehicle-searches).

## Common questions

**How many cars can I flip without a dealer license?**

It depends on your state. Many states cap how many vehicles a private person can sell per year before a dealer license is required, and the limits vary widely. Check your state's DMV rules before you start flipping regularly.

**How do I value a used car from Marketplace?**

Start with a pricing guide such as KBB or J.D. Power for the exact year, make, model, and trim, adjust for mileage and condition, then compare with recent private-party sales nearby. Pounce Pro does the guide lookup and mileage adjustment for supported vehicles automatically.

**What title problems should I watch for?**

Salvage, rebuilt, or flood titles; liens; a title not in the seller's name; and mismatched VINs. Run a vehicle history report and confirm the VIN on the title matches the dash and door jamb.
